Messaging and data growth raises Vodafone revenue

[31.01.2008 first posted on silicon republic]
With a revenue of €12.3bn (£9.2bn) the Vodafone Group saw an increase of 15.8pc, helped in Europe by growth in messaging of 8.1pc and data revenue of 35.5pc, showing an increase in data transfer such as media messaging, mobile broadband and the mobile web by users.

Overall, Vodafone reported a customer base of 252 million in the third quarter ended 31 December 2007, which meant a net gain of 10.8 million new customers.
Meanwhile, growth was strong in the EMAPA region (Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia and the Pacific), with data revenue up by 51.6pc.
Service revenue grew by 48.1pc, which Vodafone said reflected its acquisitions of Telsim in Turkey for US$4.55bn in 2006 and Tele2 in Italy in 2007.
The telecoms group reported that it had gained 3.1 million DSL customers over 11 markets following its Tele2 acquisition in Italy and Spain.
While Turkey is among Vodafone’s maturing markets, India and Egypt are true growth markets with the recent establishment of an independent tower company in India to speed up rollout and to reduce its overall cost.
“We have sustained our recent momentum in the third quarter, executing on our strategic objectives in competitive markets, with over 250 million proportionate customers driving strong growth in voice usage and data revenue,” said Arun Sarin, chief executive.
